1.Why was the UKASGB set up? - In early 2003 many sites had been advised by the main insurer for Airsoft that cover was to be withdrawn and would no longer be available. Their concern was the proliferation of casual airsoft sites and what they perceived to be an increased risk from the industry in general. However after lengthy discussions the insurer agreed to maintain cover if a Governing Body was established.

2. Why is it for sites only? - The problems that had been identified were all site related. Legislation, Health and Safety, Local Authorities, Explosive licencing etc. Also the UKAPA was already in the process of being set up. With these two things in mind it was agreed that a narrow limit of activity “Sites” and not to cut across what was already being done with the players association, would be the most sensible way to go.

--

3. Was the setting up insurance driven? - It would be untrue to say that insurance did not form an important part. The idea of a site orientated body had been mooted for some time. Indeed the idea had been put forward in 1998 by Alex Goody and then in 2003 by Paul Knaggs. The correct answer is:- “It was not so much the reason for setting it up, as this had already been put forward. But it was the catalyst that focused the minds of all who supported the idea”.

4. Why did the UKASGB impose a 328fps limit? - Please refer to "fps limits" in the UKASGB guidelines. - 38.4Kb PDF file

--

5. Is the UKASGB a commercial enterprise? - No.

--

6. Does the UKASGB tell sites how to run their games? - No. Sites have their identities and different ways of playing. Whilst the UKASGB guidelines provide a broad frame of reference there is nothing in them that prevents any site from doing it’s own thing. Matters of legislation and best practice excepted.

--

7. Are members restricted to one insurer? - No. It is a requirement that members have public liability insurance as well as Employers liability where appropriate. The insurance office used is entirely up to each member.

--

8. What did the UKASGB recommend in the recent Home Office consultative process. (2004)? - Please see “Response to Consultation” - 46.3Kb PDF file

--

9. Who are your insurers ? - The UKASGB has a number of insurers who are willing to cover Airsoft games. Download insurers list - 18.3Kb PDF file

--

10. If I were planning to open an airsoft site would I need insurance in place before I could apply for UKASGB membership? - The application process operates thus: A site owner, existing or about to start, completes the application form and sends it in. The application is then reviewed and a letter setting out the requirements that the site will need to address in order to gain full membership are set out in the response. It is then submitted to the application committee who consider if probationary membership is appropriate. Once a site has probationary membership the insurers will then provide cover on the understanding that full membership will be gained within a 6 month period. Not all the insurers require membership to the UKASGB.
